This stunning panoramic photograph was taken in 1939 at the eighth annual Hotel Gazette Golf Tournament that was hosted at Winged Foot Golf Club in Mamaroneck, New York.
The image itself is incredibly clear and is a mammoth 37” wide by 7 7/8” tall.
What makes this particularly interesting is that, standing in the back row wearing a suit and his trademark smile is legendary baseball player Babe Ruth from the New York Yankees! Ruth was an avid golfer later in his life and while he was never a formal member, he was a frequent guest at Winged Foot. He was known to play there so much, sometimes 54 holes in a day, that the members who were sports writers at the time wouldn’t make mention in their writings that he was golfing when he was supposed to be nursing injuries.
This remarkable artifact would make a tremendous addition to the collection of any vintage baseball collector, Winged Foot member, New York Yankees fan, or collector of early American golf images.
The photo is linen-backed and does have some creasing. But it is in overall good condition.
